Clement Studebaker, born on March 12, 1831, whose vision and tenacity left an indelible mark on the world of automobiles by dedicating his life to the pursuit of excellence and innovation in transportation.

Clement Studebaker started a blacksmith and wagon shop in South Bend in 1852 along with brother Henry. When John Studebaker joined his brothers in 1858, the company helped supply wagons to farmers in the Midwest. The Civil War, was a turning point for the brothers and brought about a large military contact. Shortly after the war Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company was established a 4th brother, Peter joined. As the automotive era dawned, and with ¾ million wagons under Studebaker’s belt, Clement recognized the changing tide and steered the company into the production of automobiles.

While Clement passed away on this day November 27, 1901 his foresight allowed the Studebaker Corporation became a trailblazer in the automotive landscape. The introduction of the Studebaker Electric in 1902 marked the company's entry into the automobile market, and it was followed by a series of innovative and stylish models that captured the imagination of car enthusiasts.

Unfortunately, as the industry evolved, Studebaker faced economic challenges that eventually led to the cessation of automobile production in the early 1960s. The iconic Studebaker Avanti, the last vehicle from the once majestic company, with its sleek design and cutting-edge features, echoed the forward-thinking ethos cultivated by its founder. The closure marked the end of an era, but the legacy of Studebaker endures through the countless cars that graced the roads and the memories they created for generations of drivers.

As we bid farewell to Clement Studebaker, we acknowledge his enduring impact on the industry he helped shape. His vision and the legacy of Studebaker automobiles will forever remain an integral part of the rich tapestry of automotive history. A somber edition of “It Happened Today”, but an episode of importance. Be sure to share with a friend, I most of us know a Studebaker fan.
